WOZNIAK, a solo band project by Yuta Hoshi is dropping it's 2nd album "Solution" on catune. Hoshi is known for his machine techno project TESTAV and also as a member of bands such as
DALLJUB STEP CLUB, OUTATBERO and HABIT. Catune released Greeen Linez, sauce81 and Sorcerer in 2013 crossing over from early 90's electro-funk, synth boogie to balearic/nu-disco. WOZNIAK started his career when the label was at it's hight leading Japan's post-rock scene, but this release does not mean anything nostalgic.
WOZNIAK popped up when the post-rock scene was already at a saturated state, but has always kept the live instrumentation band sound with an techno influenced groove. Last year he took a big shift to a strict minimal techno/house sound releasing his first album "Effects And Nice" from his own label 77ROMANCE. Years of going out to night clubs, Hoshi came up with a connecting sound between the Berlin minimal of Basic Channel, Rhythm & Sound, Berghain and Ostgut Ton with post-rock.
Composing and playing every instrument on all six tracks, his influences from techno and dance music gives the synth, electric guitar/bass and live drums an architectural approach with a sound design that evokes affinity with Bauhaus and German minimal which takes this piece to another dimension of art compared to an ordinary dance rock.
Swirling synth sound of 'Cell' hanging like dark clouds as if the Apocalypse is about to begin, followed by 'Morphling' with a sudden drum kit, simple yet tight showing Hoshi's skills as a drummer openning up "Solution" fearlessly. Artfully laid sharp cutting guitar and anthemic synth melody builds up/deconstructs like the huge architectures of Herzog & de Meuron. It's also the episode 0 of last albums 'TTT pt.1'. Structually influenced by BATTLES 'SZ2' this cinematic piece 'Heptagon' is based on a very well tuned 7/8 breakbeat with mystic polyrhythm and arpeggio layered emphasizing the contrast compared to emotional guitar feed backs and uplifting basslines. Flowing through the calm dark ambient track 'World', connecting to noisy hard minimal 'Less is more' (Ludwig Mies van der Rohe!) via UR and Detroit is the fastest track on the album with 140bpm 4/4 kick and aggressive colorful sound particles, pulling up the vibe of the whole album. Lingering outro '2/15' suggestive soundscape of RADIAN and TRAPIST, offers you a whole album listening experience till the end of "Solution".
WOZNIAK is restarting live performances with supporting members from May 10th, and already is eager to work on the next project. What is waiting for us after this solution? It seems that our hunger of interest won't lack for a while.
